Leadership Cumberland County
Cumberland County has been fortunate in having leadership from all sectors of the County. However, it is necessary to replenish the supply of leadership; leaders who are informed, skilled and vigorous individuals capable of understanding community problems, interpreting facts related to them and influencing decisions based on these facts. Leadership Cumberland County assures a continuous source of strong leadership by establishing a leadership program for existing and emerging leaders who will assume responsible positions in neighborhoods and communities throughout Cumberland County. The program’s objectives focus on establishing a network of leaders; providing a means to ramp-up new leaders as they enter the County; identifying emerging leaders; valuing diversity as a resource county-wide; and encouraging the development of pride in Cumberland County. GOAL: Leadership Cumberland County acquaints participants with a broad understanding of public problems, the workings of State and local government, the civic challenges facing all of us and the role the community plays in solving problems. PROGRAM TOPICS: Traditionally held the end of September, a group retreat and orientation session initiates the program year. Eight monthly sessions, referred to as Community Learning Days, are held on the first Monday of every month, November through June, typically 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Sessions are held at locations throughout the county so participants may receive firsthand knowledge of local points of interest. Community Learning Days topics are designed to educate and inform participants of the vast resources available to them, and therefore cover an array of topics prevalent to the successes and challenges we face in Cumberland County. They include the following:
Class Structure: Twenty-four participants are accepted into the class on an annual basis. A percentage of the participants represent charter members of the program, with the remaining class participants determined through an application and selection process. Current charter memberships are held by the following organizations:
Participant Commitment: Leadership Cumberland County class participants commit to the following upon acceptance into the program:
Note: Full or partial tuition reimbursement, due to lack of participant commitment as described above, is not a practice of the Leadership Cumberland County program.
