William Whelan joins Cumberland County College Board of Trustees

William F. Whelan, of Upper Deerfield, has joined the Cumberland County College Board of Trustees.

William Whelan“We’re delighted to welcome Bill to the Board,” said Cumberland County College President Dr. Yves Salomon-Fernandez. “His experiences in private industry and in public life will greatly help our stewardship as an important community asset and vehicle for socioeconomic progress.”

Whelan has extensive experience in the banking industry. He currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Branch, Government Banking, Marketing and Community Reinvestment for Capital Bank of New Jersey. Previously, he held positions as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Colonial Bank, and Vice President/Regional Manager of Summit Bank.

A longtime resident of Cumberland County, Whelan has been very active in governmental, civic and professional organizations. He sat on the Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 2008 until 2013, serving as Freeholder Director for two years. Other leadership roles include: current Chair of the Cumberland County Homelessness Trust Fund, Bridgeton Code Blue Site Coordinator, past President of Southern NJ Freeholders Association, former Director of New Jersey Association of Counties, past President of Cumberland Regional Board of Education, and former Treasurer for Upper Deerfield Township.

Whelan also served with the NJ Redevelopment Authority, League of Municipalities, New Jersey School Boards Association, Upper Deerfield Economic Development Committee, Bridgeton Rotary Club, area chambers of commerce, and numerous other organizations. In 2013, he received the “Southern Star Award” from the Southern New Jersey Freeholders’ Association for distinguished service to New Jersey’s eight southern counties. In addition, Whelan was selected as one of “South Jersey Biz” magazine’s 2017 Executives of the Year.

Whelan earned a bachelor’s degree in Management Science from Kean University and is a graduate of the ABA National Compliance School at the University of Oklahoma, as well as the Graduate School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia.
