Student Accreditation Information

Cumberland County College
Middle States Accreditation Site Visit Preparation
Invitation for Student Participation

Cumberland County College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). For the purpose of accreditation, the United States is divided into six regions. Within each of these regions, the authority to accredit is granted by the U.S. Department of Education to one (or in the case of one region, two) accrediting body. MSCHE is the accrediting body for the mid-Atlantic region, Pueto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and for certain institutions elsewhere throughout the world. Accreditation by MSCHE is through a peer-review process that is centered on institutional improvement.

At ten year intervals, each accredited institution must prepare and submit a Self-Study Report assessing the ways in which the institution meets MSCHE’s fourteen standards as outlined in the Characteristics of Excellence in Higher Education document. This submission will lead to a review of the study and a three-day site visit to the college by a team of trained evaluators, our peers from similar institutions. Also at ten-year intervals, but at the five year interval between site visit evaluations, each accredited institution must prepare and submit a Periodic Review Report. These two forms of review allow for the evaluation of each of the approximately 540 colleges and universities accredited by MSCHE at five year intervals.

For the past two years, Cumberland County College has been developing and writing its Self-Study Report in preparation for its decennial site visit. A draft of that report has been submitted to the site visit team chair and he will visit our college on November 10, 2010. The purpose of his visit is to assess our readiness for the site visit that is scheduled to occur March 6-9, 2011. The site visit team will consist of eight evaluators from other colleges in the Middle States region. We would like to invite CCC’s students to participate in this process. Here’s how you can help:

1. Review the current draft of the self-study at: www.cccnj.edu/pdf/Self-Study Report January 2011.pdf 2. Attend and participate in a discussion with the site visit team. This meeting will take place Tuesday, March 8, at 10:30 AM in the Banquet Room of the Luciano Conference Center. Please e-mail Dr. Clark at rclark@cccnj.edu if you can attend the March 8 meeting (we’re planning refreshments and need a head count).  3. Plan to participate in the site visit that will take place March 6-9, 2011.

If you would like more information about the accreditation process, you can visit the MSCHE web site at www.msche.org . Feel free to contact Dr. Clark at rclark@cccnj.edu to offer comments or for more information.
