Cumberland County Literacy Institute

Promoting and developing the adult literacy rate in Cumberland County is a desperately needed service. A 1992 survey by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics estimated that about 21% of the adult population—more than 40 million Americans over the age of 16—had only rudimentary reading and writing skills. A 1996 National Adult Literacy Survey funded by the US Department of Education found that over 60% of adults in Cumberland County, New Jersey, are either non-literate or only functionally literate.

Long-term follow-up studies by the National Center for Family Literacy found that 51% of adults participating in literacy programs earned their GED or the equivalent, and 43% of those participating became employed, compared with a 14% employment rate before they enrolled in a literacy program. The Center also found that 23% of those on public assistance when first enrolled in literacy programs are now self-sufficient. Adult literacy programs work.

The Cumberland County Literacy Institute (CCLI) is a way to revitalize our community by enabling our disadvantaged adults and older youth to gain the literacy skills necessary to empower their lives. The CCLI offers not only one-on-one tutoring programs at local libraries and other designated sites throughout the county, but also outreach programs for various faith-based and neighborhood organizations.
