Blackboard - Technical Requirements

It is recommended that you...

Have a reliable Computer and Internet Service:
A broadband connection (Cable or DSL). Using a dial-up connection is not recommended as it will decrease your productivity and can be disconnected while accessing Blackboard or taking an exam.

Have an updated Web Browser:
Internet Explorer 7.0, 6.0 SP1, 6.0 SP2 | Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or 1.5
AOL Browsers are not recommended as it conflicts with Blackboard.
For more information please click on Browser Tuneup.

Have the appropriate Java Software:
Java affects uploading and attaching files, posting to Discussions, sending Mail, using the Chat and Calendar tools. Go to www.java.com to install the latest Java Software.

Configure your web browser to Accept Cookies:
Blackboard installs a sessionID cookie each time a user logs in. Also, some course content require that a cookie file be installed on your computer to allow the pages to load properly.

Disable or Lower security levels of your Anti-Virus/Spyware/Adware:
Some anti-virus/spyware/adware software programs have been known to restrict or deny Blackboard pages from loading properly. In some cases the Login page for Blackboard does load at all. If you are experiencing errors loading pages of Blackboard consider disabling or lowering your security levels.

Disable your Pop-Up Blockers:
Pop-up blockers cause technical problems in Blackboard. Most web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox can be configured to work well with Blackboard by allowing cookies and web addresses to be accepted.

Have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint):
Instructors use these software programs to create lecture notes, assignments, and other course materials. If you do not have access to these programs you may have difficulty viewing files. A temporary solution is to download the "file viewers" below. These file viewers will allow you to view course materials created in Word, Excel, & PowerPoint but will not give you the option to edit or save changes made to the files. Keep in mind that these software programs are available on the computer labs on campus.
