Cumberland County College’s new partnerships offer fitness savings

Thursday, September 21, 2017

Cumberland County College’s agreement with its two newest community partners, Inspira Health Network and Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA, will help college students and employees in reducing the cost of staying healthy.

Research conducted by Michigan State University found a connection between regular exercise and higher GPAs among college students. The study revealed that students who were members of recreational sports and fitness centers during their freshman and sophomore years had higher GPAs than students who were not. The researchers also found that students who had memberships at a gym were less likely to drop out of college. In addition, there was a 3.5 percent increase in two-year retention rates among the members.

“Cumberland understands the importance of physical fitness,” said Dr. Yves Salomon-Fernandez, President of Cumberland County College. “This collaboration is intended to promote a healthy lifestyle leading to higher student success, higher attendance, and higher productivity in the workplace.”
