Energy Institute

The Sustainable Energy Technology program prepares students to move directly into the workforce upon completion of noncredit modules, career certificate programs or an associate degree. Students will be qualified for entry-level positions in sustainable energy technology fields including solar energy systems, building energy auditing, wind energy technology, weatherization and sustainable building systems. Courses provide students with a solid foundation in basic scientific principles as well as mathematics. Students are exposed to theory, materials and equipment necessary to work in the field.

Technical Drawing and CAD
This introductory course gives students a strong background in the area of drafting and computer-aided drafting (CAD). The basics of handdrawn and computer-aided drawings are covered.

Students work with professional-quality equipment in the hand-drawn portion of the course, while AutoCAD is introduced and used during the CAD phase. A variety of drawing techniques and styles is taught along with the different types of drawing, including technical lettering and sketching, single-view drawing, orthographics, isometrics, worked detail drawings and some architectural drawings.

Energy, the Environment and Society
Students will participate in a number of handson lab activities to explore the science of solar energy systems, energy auditing and management, wind energy and emerging sustainable energy technologies, such as electric vehicle, zero-use houses, tidal and wave energy and alternative fuels.

Green Building Technology
This course is designed to enlighten students to the current green building technologies and to help them realize the impact and applications of green building as a practice.

Construction Safety Management
Provides an overview of fundamentals of Safety Management Principles, including a detailed review of OSHA regulations and standards pertinent to energy auditors, solar system installers, green builders and weatherization technicians who expect to perform or influence safety-related activities on a construction project. Minimum safety requirements are discussed in a practical context for immediate application in construction field operations. Course materials include reviews of OSHA Standards for the Construction Industry, selected sections of OSHA Standards for General Industry, and general principles of construction safety management.

Photovoltaic Solar Technology
This course provides a hands-on approach to the operation, design and installation of residential solar electric systems. Students will be offered an opportunity to build full-scale solar systems on site. Students may also take the entry-level examination for NABCEP entry-level solar photovoltaic systems installer upon successful completion of this course.

LEED Green Associate
The LEED Green Associate credential is for professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice. This credential denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction, and operations. LEED Green Associate is the best introduction to green building that you will find; it is high level and comprehensive in nature, providing insights into a 100+ areas of green building. At the end of this course, students will be able to: define LEED and the major LEED rating systems; explain the core concepts associated with building a LEED building; define the LEED Application process; understand integrated project delivery and why green building is different than traditional building.

BPI Auditor Certification Training
Train to become a home performance pro with Building Performance Institute’s (BPI) Building Analyst I certification. Training will give you the knowledge and skill to perform whole house energy audits. Understand the relationship between all the systems in the house and the effects on health, safety, comfort and efficiency. Gain knowledge of building science fundamentals, energy conservation strategies, heat loss calculations, and blower door testing. In this two-week training program, learn to find the cause of your customers’ energy conservation problems and provide solutions that work. Fee includes written and field tests, scoring as well as all course materials, handouts and reference books.
